Bootcamps

The Chapter supports hands-on learning through practical bootcamps that help participants build confidence and apply digital skills to real-world challenges.

Recent examples include the Digital Health Bootcamp 2025: Designing Digital Health Solutions, an MDIA-funded hands-on activity bringing together ICT and healthcare professionals and students to design practical digital health solutions in collaboration with IEEE Computer Society Malta.

The Chapter also supported Mobile App Bootcamp 2025: AppVisionaries – Empowering Women in Mobile App Development, an MDIA-funded online bootcamp aimed at supporting women in business without technical backgrounds, delivered across three sessions to build confidence and practical skills in mobile app development.

Hackathons and Innovation Challenges

The Chapter encourages practical problem-solving, collaborative coding and exposure to emerging technologies through hackathons and innovation-focused activities.

IEEE Malta Hackathon 2026: Collaborative Coding, which will be held at the end of October, is organised with the Faculty of ICT, University of Malta. and MDIA supported by HLL, CareMalta, Frontiers and the Ministry of Health and Active Ageing.

Students, software engineers and cybersecurity professionals have the opportunity to work with real datasets and hardware and explore solutions that will improve local and digital health eco system.

Science in the City and Public Engagement

The Chapter supports STEM outreach and public engagement activities that bring computing, robotics and technology closer to families, young people and the wider community.

IEEE Malta activities have included participation in Science in the City, with public-facing activities such as robotics demonstrations and hands-on engagement.

UM NewsPoint also lists Science in the City 2026 as taking place in Valletta on 25 and 26 September 2026.

Digital Health Computer Society Award

The Chapter also supports digital health education, research visibility and student recognition. The 3rd Digital Health Symposium 2026 was organised around the theme “Digital Health in Action: Moving from Vision to Action”, bringing together policymakers, healthcare professionals, researchers, students and industry leaders. The event was supported by the University of Malta, IEEE Malta Section and IEEE Computer Society.

The symposium included poster lightning presentations by MSc in Digital Health students, judged by representatives from the IEEE Computer Society, with the best poster to be awarded during IEEE’s Annual Awards event. (Add link )

The Chapter recognises excellence in digital health research and innovation through student-focused awards and poster recognition linked to the MSc in Digital Health and related University of Malta activities.

Student Excellence and Best Master’s Award

The Chapter supports recognition of student achievement across computing, ICT and digital technology disciplines. IEEE Malta’s Awards Recognition & Appreciation Night celebrated achievements across the University of Malta’s Faculties of Engineering and ICT, including awards for Best in Computing and Best in ICT.

The Chapter supports the recognition of outstanding postgraduate achievement through awards that celebrate excellence in computing, ICT, digital health and applied technology research.
