IEEE Robot Wars winners 2015:

We are Ariana Cassar and Andrea Mifsud, two students at the University of Malta reading a course on Electrical and Electronics Engineering. As part of our university experience, we took part in Robot Wars 2015, where we competed with our robot, 3310, a pneumatic flipper.

We took care of programming the controls for the motors, the motor drive, and the weapon consisting of a pneumatic system. The body work was constructed and machined at ST Microelectronics, where we were guided on which materials to use and the best design for strength, in compromise with the criteria set by the rules and regulations.

The drive was comprised of a pulley drive. The pneumatic system is made up of a 60 bar tank, regulated to 10 bar for the operation of the valve and piston. The body work was made of steel and checkered aluminum plate.

The name for the robot came from the old mobile phones produced by Nokia, which were well known for their capability to withstand breakage. On the day, this proved to be correct, as 3310 managed to win all battles, finally winning the competition.

Darth Invader is a 5.44kg combat robot having a 6mm thick spinning bar which serves to attack the opponent while also defensing itself with the bar’s upright ends. The name was inspired from Star Wars’ Darth Vader. The team members are Norbert Bonnici, Neil Baldacchino, and Alison Baldacchino who come from the different backgrounds of Physics, ICT, and Engineering respectively. Darth Invader is a two wheel direct drive that uses the same motor model to spin the weapon, all through a 6S LiPo battery.
